Going Home After Your Surgery

The following information will assist you in planning for your discharge from the Day Surgery. It is important that you and your family or carer are involved in this process, as you will be able to identify any problems that you may face at home during your recovery period. The time patients spend in hospital is getting less and less, and it has been shown that the best place to recover is in your home surroundings. Shorter hospital stays, however, mean that some patients go home before they are fully independent with their care, so planning for discharge allows you to think of ways of ensuring all of your needs are met.
It would be helpful to start planning for discharge from Day Surgery even before you are admitted, as things often need to be put into place before you are admitted.

The checklist below may assist you in considering what arrangements you will need to make to ensure a safe recovery when you return home.

  • Will you need to go to the surgeon’s rooms for follow-up treatment upon discharge from Norwood Day Surgery? If so, how will you get there?
  • Will you go to your home from Day Surgery, or will you stay with family or friends?
  • How will you get home? If you are having a General Anaesthetic or Sedation, you will need someone to pick you up & stay with you for 24 hours.
You will not be allowed to travel by Taxi or Uber unless you have had Local Anaesthetic only.
  • Do you have someone to help you when you go home? Discuss with your family/carer/friends the type of help you may need and how long you will need assistance.
  • Will you need to consider caring for your children?
  • Do you usually look after someone else? If this is the case, you will need to make arrangements for their care. Consider how long it will be until you can return to work or your care role.
  • Please bring all the medicines you usually take to the hospital with you so that they may be continued unless otherwise advised by your Anaesthetist.
  • Consider your dietary requirements when you leave the Day Surgery. Will shopping and cooking be a problem when you go home? You may consider preparing and freezing some easily re-heated meals before your surgery. Your surgeon may provide information about the type of diet recommended in the post-op instructions.

Partnering with Consumers

In 1978, the Alma Ata Declaration proclaimed that individuals and communities possess both the right and the obligation to engage in the formulation and execution of their healthcare actively. Since then, policies have emerged that advocate for the rights and duties of healthcare consumers, placing a growing emphasis on their involvement in the planning, conception, execution, and assessment of healthcare services. This has marked a gradual yet consistent transition towards acknowledging healthcare providers, healthcare services, and consumers as collaborative partners within the healthcare system.
