How Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) accelerates tissue & wound healing

Are you a runner who constantly relies on strapping to support your weak knee? That aching pain around the kneecap isn’t just limited to runners.

If you play a sport that involves high-stress exercises, you could suffer from sore knees. Basketball, netball and other court sports can iritate the knee joint and put you out of the game. But there’s good news: You can heal your knee the natural way with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.

Platelet Rich Plasma injections to treat knee tendonitis.

With knee issues, there’s always a worry that it’s going to lead to a replacement. But with PLP, you can harness your body’s own natural renewal process.

By using blood extracted from your own body, there is growth that happens, including tissue and wound healing. For runners with knee woes, specially prepared platelets are injected into the knee area, guided by an ultrasound. These platelets, known as ‘growth factors’, stimulate repair and regeneration of tendons and cartilage.

The ‘growth factors’ we refer to include:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor
  • Transforming growth factor beta
  • Fibroblast growth factor
  • Insulin-like growth factor 1
  • Insulin-like growth factor 2
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor
  • Epidermal growth factor
  • Interleukin 8
  • Keratinocyte growth factor
  • Connective tissue growth factor.

PRP has also been used to treat tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, achilles tendonitis, and osteoarthritis. While the traditional methods of treating knee problems are still widely used, PRP promotes tissue formation, which is a huge advantage over anti-inflammatories and surgery. It’s a relatively low-pain, low-risk procedure that has extraordinary benefits.

According to a recent article, PRP improved pain relief and function, and in up to 73% of patients, appeared to delay the progression of osteoarthritis, which is a progressive disease. Treatment with PRP was also useful in improving stiffness and function. The study appears online, ahead of print, in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine.

Stop pain. Stay in the game.

The next time you feel pain in your knee or are cradling it with an icepack, remember this: The power is right inside you – unlock it. Don’t rely on that strap for the rest of your life. Heal your knee, once and for all.
