How breasts change as you age

Sometimes it happens fast. You look in the mirror and, all of a sudden, you notice your breasts have changed. That once-perky chest seems like only yesterday. For others, the fight against gravity is gradual.

There’s no doubt about it. Breasts do change as the years go on. It can be hard to accept, though, as they’re one of the most feminine parts of a woman’s body. The biggest challenge for women, especially in their 40’s and 50’s is accepting that it’s natural for their bodies to change. Add childbirth, hormonal changes and health issues into the mix, and this can fast-track change.

Breasts in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s & beyond.

Once breasts fully develop, they look their best throughout a woman’s 20’s and into their early 30’s. Dense tissue gives them that enviable tight, smooth and supple youthful look. From around the age of 40, you’ll notice changes in size and shape. This is normal, as the tissue becomes less glandular and more fatty.

There’s a natural decline in estrogen which causes the skin and connective tissue of the breast to become less hydrated, making it elastic. That fuller, plumper feeling becomes a distant memory.

You might start to notice stretch marks, downward pointing nipples, a flattened appearance, wider space between the breasts, and lumpiness. This is all part of ageing, particularly during menopause which can start at around 45 years of age.

This transition can be a trying time for any woman. Be kind to your body during this time and do your best to promote a gentle ageing process.
